The past two weeks...

Lately, I've been doing a good job of blogging once a week. I think that timeline is just about enough time to have something to blog about. Sometimes nothing happens in a week's span, sometimes a lot. But I just did too much last week and didn't get around to posting last Monday. Today is making up for that.

Well, a weekend ago was when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I came out. I was VERY excited about this movie! Brandon and I went on Saturday morning to an IMAX viewing. I loved it! Yes, some parts from the book were left out and some things changed slightly for the movie, but overall I thought they did a MUCH better job with this part I than they did for the previous movie, the Half Blood Prince. I know many people were complaining about how dark the whole story has become, but that is how the books progressed, too, and that is the purpose of why Voldemort being in power was so bad. It is because the world WAS so dark when he had reign, and people were miserable. I find that this being a complaint proves that the producers achieved what the story line was trying to tell.

One other complaint I heard about the movie was that this person felt they were sitting watching Castaway, that there was a whole lot of nothing going on screen for a while. I suppose Harry, Ron, and Hermione being in exile did feel that way, and maybe I didn't interpret it that way because I read the books, but I still found it exciting throughout.

The next day we went to the Cowboy's game!!! Oh my gosh, it was fun! We may have drank a little more than we should, but we had a blast! And the Cowboys won! Here are some highlights:

Not a great picture, but this is Roger Staubach in the suite behind us!

I took a picture of the score, but it looks more like a picture I accidentally took (the lights are too bright) rather than one I intended to take.

After the game, we saw some friends who just got engaged. I'm so happy for them! I don't think he knows what he's in for during the planning process though, hahaha! Then we went home, slept a lot, and needed to eat a lot of junk food to recover.

This week I managed to work four days (per my request, many people were willing to be cancelled and I requested to work on my days and my extra shift). I floated to MSICU at my sister hospital, then spent the remaining days at mine. I was in charge the last two days and it was really nice. Although I had a muscle spasm in my left shoulder that was incredibly painful, I was in charge with a total of 4 patients each night! It was very nice. Technically, we started at 3 patients each night but had a fourth by 9pm, so at least it was over and done with early.

Thanksgiving was fun. We didn't get to see Brandon's family because of extenuating circumstances, but my brother was in town, which was nice. I got to go to my Granddad's and, on Friday, everyone else came to Mom and Dad's for dinner. Brandon and I stayed up a little late Friday to eat with everyone and see everyone, then went to bed around noon for work that night. I ended up cooking some for fun.

This was my Jalapeno and Cheddar Cornbread Stuffing. It was yummy. I would do a few things a little differently next time, as, although it was great, I like my dressing a little less chunky than the way it turned out. But it turned out a lot like it's picture.

I also made Pumpkin Pie Bites (no picture taken.) They tasted just like pumpkin pie to me, only they were healthy! It used no sugar and the original recipe called for 8 egg whites. Well, I think 8 egg whites sounds like a waste of eggs, for one, and, two, I didn't have that many eggs (I miscounted and didn't end up with enough eggs). Instead I used 3 eggs and one egg white. I know this makes them a little less healthy, but the fact that I used agave nectar instead of sugars I think made a big different on the sugar level of the dish. They were great!

So far, those two recipes and a third, Mexican Corn and Shrimp Chowder, comprise the totality of recipes I've tried that I found on TheNest.com and they've all been wonderful. I might even look into some of the cookbooks they have come from, as thenest.com gives you all that information. I'm sure this is what the cookbook owners would like...and they may just be selling me.

On random news, we are ahead of schedule on saving up for a house/paying off our credit debt. I'm very excited about this. I'm so anxious for February/March to see where we really stand on everything, as these are our goal dates to take a real, hard look at getting an approval for a loan and a real estate agent or if we need another month. It's getting harder and harder to WAIT. Waiting SUCKS!

Meanwhile, Brandon has found another program that can get him a Bachelors of some sort that would use his police academy classes as credit. So he's making a move on that here soon. Hopefully he'll be able to take a class or two in the Spring. I know he will feel really good finally making a move to get a Bachelors for all his hard work.

About my Masters, I still haven't heard from them! I sent them an email. I'll give them until about Wednesday to answer me before I start calling. I'm not totally disappointed that I haven't heard anything, though, because I'm not sure with the house buying we want to be doing that starting school in the Spring would be the easiest, but I'd at least like to know if I had the option or not. So, still waiting.

I'll update you again next week! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Now...on to Christmas!

What's going on...

Absolutely nothing this past week. Which is nice. I worked 4 days (I usually work 3) and I enjoyed it. Means a prettier paycheck come pay day!

But, I'm SUPER EXCITED about this coming week and weekend! This week I work Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I NEVER not work a weekend day so this well be WEIRD!

On top of that, Harry Potter comes out Friday!!! We probably won't go see it Friday, but I really want to try to see it Saturday morning! Maybe some brunch, some Harry Potter, then home to rest up.

Here is a teaser!

Also, we get to go to see a Cowboy's game!!! Granted, I may be more excited about seeing and being in the new stadium more than watching the Cowboys, but I think it will be fun. We've also found out that a couple of our friends will be there as well, so we might tailgate! I've never tailgated before!

We used stubhub.com to get the tickets and got a super deal on them. Our parking is included in what we paid for the tickets, too. We'll be in section 127 on row 16. I'm too excited about this!

My brother will be in town for almost 3 days (gets here early Wednesday before Thanksgiving and leaves late the Friday afterwards) for Thanksgiving, and I'm excited about seeing him. He's been going all over the United States for interviews for neurosurgical residencies! I'm so proud of him! He'll even come interview at my hospital, although it's a really competitive program so where he ends up could be anywhere...but we'll see. It would be...different, working with my brother like that. If he did come our way, the residents rotate through all kinds of areas (like through Children's hospital, the VA hospital, Parkland hospital, Zale Lipshy hospital on spine, tumor, and vascular rotations, basic med/surg rotation, research, and maybe more. Those are the ones I know of. He'll also be around for Christmas, but only maybe a day or two longer than his Thanksgiving trip. I already have my request-off paper work completed so I will make sure I am out in Lubbock celebrating my brother's graduation in about 6 months! Wow, that time has flown!

On that note, I'll sign off. Not too much to rant or rave about this week. Maybe I'll have some fun pictures next week for ya!

Who likes Boardwalk Empire?

I do!

It is an incredibly interesting and well done series! Brandon and I both feel, after watching an hour episode, that we'd just finished watching a movie. There is a wonderful start, build up to the climax, and a good end that you feel complete but just enough cliff hanger to be anxious for the next episode. Love it.

If you don't know about the show, it is an HBO series that covers Prohibition, Atlantic City during that time period, and the strengthening and professional organization of the Mafia. What the show does really well is the dialogue. The word choice (obviously with exception to the points where the men are cussing at each other) and sentence structure is just one we do not use anymore. The outfits are fun (and even more amusing when Lucy was looking for lingerie, LOL). Also, they seem to keep to the period very well. If that time period didn't have it or didn't do it, it doesn't show up.

I will do my best to talk about the show without ruining it for anyone who wants to watch it.

My current favorite characters:

Margaret Shroeder

I love her accent. I love that she's one of the educated women that make Nucky happy that he's supporting women's suffrage. Unfortunately, in recent episodes, I'm questioning her though processes, but, ultimately (at least right now) it seems she's trying to make the best decisions for her family.

Agent Nelson Van Alden

Now, him being a favorite of mine is mostly because he is so odd. Yes, he is a dedicated worker, his ideology is extremely conservative and traditional, but behind closed doors, his conventions are expressed in a quite different fashion, one that is not so much conventional.

Eddie Kessler

Picking this guy as one of my favorites may seem odd, especially since he is not quite a big player in the show (at least not yet, if he should become so later), but, he is my R2D2 of Boardwalk Empire. He seems to work hard to please Nucky, always seems cheerful, and just seems a little clumsy, but endearingly so.

I could list the guys I don't like so much, but it would be about one guy appearing to be a politician through and through, to the point you can't quite decide if an action in the show was because he was actually being good hearted or an action that benefits him politically (or just avoids a potential fallout). Another guy I'm not a huge fan of is because he seems to have high and dry left the girl who mothered his son...and his son, then fell in love with a prostitute? But then seemed to care and love this prostitute fully. That is frustrating!

Either way, I'm looking forward to how this show will progress.

So far, famous Mobsters that are involved in this show so far are:
  • Al Capone
  • Meyer Lansky
  • Arnold Rothstein
  • Lucky Luciano
  • Johnny Torrio

And some of those guys, at this point in the show, are just "henchmen." They're not big, bad guys just yet. That makes it more fun for me!

And, just to change the pace and mention something else in case someone reading this doesn't give a crap about that show, lets talk about fanny packs.

Yep, I brought up fanny packs. I was looking through something on the internet somewhere (this was a while ago, but something this week made me think of it again) and I saw a mention of a fanny pack being "cute." Let me find one that may have been mentioned as "cute."

Here:

Fine, I'll admit, the fabrics and such of fanny packs CAN be cute, and belts can really accent and add to your outfit, depending on the outfit and your body type, but I'm just gonna say NO to fanny packs.

Thank you very much.

Top 3 Serial Killers? ...among other things

In just random conversation the other day (do I have anything BUT random conversation?), Brandon said, "Hey! He's one of my favorite serial killers!" (or something like this because I know Brandon will read this and pick on me for not making a perfect quote, but whatever, you get the idea.)

My point is, however, he has "favorite" serial killers?! WHAT?!

I married a nut job, I think.

Oh, so you're curious who his favorites are, too? I made him send me his list.

Brandon's Top 3 Ranked Serial Killers

  1. Jack the Ripper Brandon's all time favorite serial killer. He loves movies and informational shows about this bad guy. I think part of the intrigue is the reports that the killer may have had surgical experience and the fact that it was never solved, even though quite a few killings did occur.
  2. Andrew Cunanan This gentleman is the bad guy who killed Gianni Versace. That killing is the only reason this guy's name even touches my radar. Otherwise, I would have no a clue who he was. But, he killed other people, or they wouldn't call him a serial killer. Apparently, he accomplished at least 5 killings in a three month period, then killed himself (death #6?) all by the age of 27. I'm actually glad I haven't been so productive as this one. I think Brandon rates him number 2 because of the strange circumstances that the police have tried to put together to why this man just up and started killing people.
  3. Green River Killer (aka Gary Ridgeway) When he mentioned this last one, I said, "WHO!?" He didn't get as much media attention as the previous two, obviously. But this guy...he was BAD. He's also still alive, but very much behind bars. This guy also murdered prostitutes (when I heard this I accused Brandon of loving guys who killed "working girls," but I'll give you the explanation he gave me in a moment). He murdered LOTS of prostitutes. The article I linked says he confessed to more murders than any other American serial killer. (I would so rate this guy as number one, myself) He confessed to 48 murders, 42 of which the police suspected. He claims to have murdered 71, and Brandon told me there are suspicions that he murdered many more.

The reasoning behind killing prostitutes is briefly mentioned if you read the article I linked on Gary Ridgeway. It's basically because they're easily disposable (not what I think, just the easiest way to explain it). Many of them are runaways in the first place, they're accustomed to disappearing (escaping current pimp, left with new pimp, running away from the lifestyle, etc), they also frequently get in cars with strange men, go to excluded, dark, unnoticeable places, and, often, do not have anyone, other than their pimp, who would miss them and report them missing. Also, they were easy to find and require little coaxing.

All the more reason to not become a whore for a living. If you ever really needed one in the first place.

Moving on to the fact my husband is a little...off (and, thus, perfect for me)...is how he likes to play jokes on his mom. This wouldn't really work with any other mom. His mom is smart, with a vast knowledge of random things, just like him. I have no idea how this started, but apparently, one year for Mother's Day, he altered who he addressed the Mother's Day card to...instead of Mom, it said one of the following:

That is just to name a few. Strangely, this past year, he wrote "Mom" on the card and I said to him, "Why did you write Mom and not a bad guy's name?" His response was something like, "I don't know. Didn't think of a tyrant so I just wrote "Mom," I guess." And, Lord help me, I said back to him, "But, do you think she'll be upset that you wrote "Mom" instead of thinking of a bad guy like you always do?" I seriously thought, "Oh my gosh, what if she thinks he didn't put enough effort in this year and she's sad?" My perspective in life has painfully been altered. Sigh.

Other things this week: got my car fixed (may have mentioned that already), worked extra, Bella showed up with a gash similar to JJ's, Daddy "fixed" it and posted it on his facebook, Halloween (which I did not participate in because I was TIRED), a 3 year old's birthday party, and I got a couple pictures from my birthday breakfast!

Bella's injury:

And her "patch" job, courtesy of Daddy. Oh, the wonders of duct tape. (Note: she hated it, moped around the house the ENTIRE time it was on, and was HYPER when it came off. It has since scabbed over and looks like it should heal well.)

Here is the super awesome cake my friend made for her daughter's 3 year birthday! Yay, Tinkerbell!!!

And pictures from the birthday breakfast!
