Things that I want you to know/be aware of if you ever are admitted to the hospital

So, I'm not going into the details of my night that has led me to this...but lets just be aware of the fact that might night has gone in such a way that has led me to want to do this.

And please take to heart, this is coming from an ICU nurse. And by no means does it apply to everyone, but its still food for thought. Thank you.

First, the fact you are in the hospital does not let you off the hook of at least mildly to moderately taking care of yourself. If you are fully able to do so, I do expect you to brush your own teeth, change positions in your bed (please for the love of your own skin change positions in your bed), and bathe yourself to the best of your ability. I don't mind you asking for assistance in difficult parts, especially since sometime we say you're not allowed to get out of bed to make them easier, but just be aware this is not day care. You are an adult. (If you're not an adult, why are you reading my blog?)

Next, whatever tube, line, or drain that is in you must stay there. Especially you girls out there, you will more than likely have a tube in your hoohah so you don't have to get up to pee. Please DO NOT pull on this tube. If you are unfortunate enough to have one go down your nose, don't pull it out. Not only will we have to put it in AGAIN, there is a chance it could go into your lungs, and that is NOT a good thing.

Ok, if you DO infact pull one of those previously mentioned tubes or make us so nervous by your actions that you will, you will most likely have "reminders" places on your wrists and/or ankles so you will not hurt yourself by doing so. That includes trying to get out of the bed we asked you to stay in. We usually need you to stay there for a reason. If you don't understand it, it is perfectly reasonable to expect an explanation from your caregivers. But until then, just assume its for your safety.

And please know, that unless expressly told otherwise, you're most likely totally cool turn over in bed. Now, granted, you may not be able to sleep on your tummy, but definitely on your side. We usually do not set up our tubes/lines/drains/etc in such a way that just simply by turning you will ruin the set up.

Ok, anyways, I feel better. Thank you. There may be more, but lets just leave it at that.
